Course Description

A Christian View Toward Racial Understanding

Examine the meaning of prejudices from a spiritual perspective, and the responsibilities of Christians, as they relate to judging persons based on various life categories in addition to race (such as age, religious beliefs, sexual preferences, economic status, and the like).

Rethinking Christian Education

Examine the current trends, methodologies, and practices in Christian education to determine their validity and alliance with the Scriptures.

Dean Certification Part I

Review the history of Christian education in the life of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Primary emphasis will be centered on COPP, its founders, and its objectives. Students will also be introduced to the availability and concept of Specialization training. The course will include such vital information as enlistment and training of staff. The concept of dean of record (DOR) will be introduced. Students will become familiar with forms and procedures necessary for the management of schools, classes, and student progress.

Dean Certification Part II

Review the step-by-step procedures for accrediting Christian leadership schools, beginning with Step 1 (selecting and certifying a dean) and continuing through Step 13 (completing and submitting the final report), together with the dean’s annual report to the state director. The concept of dean of record will be introduced to the student, along with a clear explanation of the certificate and specialization programs.

Dean Certification Part III

Lead a review of forms and administrative procedures. The students will be alerted to “hot spots” to be avoided by deans and presidents in the planning and supervision of the school as it progresses. Likewise, the students will learn steps for advising and monitoring individual students through the phases and programs of the Christian leadership school system.

Dean Certification Part IV

Prepare the students for internship and the administration of that first school, and for advising and guiding individual students through CLS programs. Students will review the entire program of instruction. Emphasis will be placed on the enhancement of Christian education in all areas: COPP, Sunday school, Bible study programs, Training Union, and other teaching venues. The students will explore ways in which unity can be developed throughout the convention’s education ministry at the local, district, state, and national levels.

Recertification of Deans

Instruct deans seeking recertification. Deans are required to be recertified every five (5) years. Contemporary issues in Christian education, trends, and methods will be addressed as a portion of this course.

The Work of the Youth Director

Acquaint the youth director with the work of the Youth Department of the National Baptist Convention. The structure, goals, and objectives of youth work will be the focus of the course. Introduce students to resources that are appropriate and available for Youth Ministry leadership.

Pastor’s Alternative for Teacher Certification (Including pre- work before the session)

Attention will be given to the concept of Pastor as Lead Christian Educator, teaching methods, and an introduction to the Sunday School Publishing Board.

The History and Continuing Role of the African American Church in America
(APT Phase 3 Course)

Congregational Leadership in the Twenty-first Century
(APT Phase 4 Course)

Inspect the professional demands of church leadership on the life of the pastor. Look at the practical needs of the congregation, the responsibilities of the leaders, and the need to care for self and the congregation for optimal ministry results.

Workshop: Trinity Wellness 101

H.O.P.E. Health Ambassador Training

This seminar will provide “train the trainer” health education and promotion curriculum for faith and community organizations. This training moves participants from the biblical foundation of faith and health through the basics of starting a health ministry, and, finally, through effective health promotion and outreach. The health ambassador model has been embraced by First Lady Michelle Obama in her Let’s Move! Initiative.
